Valve confirms hardware development

Post by igoDrMacro on Tue Sep 04, 2012 11:26 am

A job listing on Valve’s site confirms that they will indeed be developing hardware. A listing for an industrial designer says “Valve is traditionally a software company. Open platforms like the PC and Mac are important to us, as they enable us and our partners to have a robust and direct relationship with customers. We’re frustrated by the lack of innovation in the computer hardware space though, so we’re jumping in.”

Valve is interested in creating new user experiences. “Even basic input, the keyboard and mouse, haven’t really changed in any meaningful way over the years,” it says. “There’s a real void in the marketplace, and opportunities to create compelling user experiences are being overlooked.”

We have been speculating about Valve’s entry into the hardware market since March, when rumors suggested Valve was working on a Steam Box console. Valve debunked those rumors, however later, a listing for an electronics engineer to work on "platform hardware" emerged.

I think the rumor going around put an idea in Valves head. They have a good name out there as a game distributor why not take that name and throw out something that can play games.

Tons of Valve news

Post by igoDrMacro on Tue Sep 11, 2012 10:38 am

Valves Hardware info:
On this weeks episode of the IGO Podcast, we discussed the job posting valve has on their site. I wondered if they were just trolling at this point, well apparently the hardware they are looking to make is.... a visual headset of sorts. An article in the NY Times shed some light on the situation http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/technology/valve-a-video-game-maker-with-few-rules.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all In the interview employees from Valve say they believe gaming headsets could “let players lose themselves inside a virtual reality and, eventually, blend games with their views of the physical world.”

Steam on your tv?:
Separately, The Times also confirmed that on Monday, Valve began a public test of Big Picture. The Times describes it as “a new television-friendly interface for buying Steam games and playing them on computers in the living room.” Big Picture was teased last month, but full details haven’t been released. It looks we’ll find out quite a bit more this week.

EA to buy Valve???
Apparently all video game news comes from the NY Times now, because they also reported that Electronic Arts was prepared to pay up to $1 billion in order to acquire Valve. The article goes on to say the claims come courtesy of "two people with knowledge of the discussion who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private". Why the deal didn't go through isn't crystal clear, however Valve co-founder Gabe Newell, has apparently long been convinced that the company would "disintegrate" if it was ever bought by another company. As well as Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter estimates that Valve would today be valued at around $2.5 billion, mainly thanks to its Steam digital distribution service. Valve is also believed to make far more money from Steam than it does from actual sales of its own games.
