This weeks free game was released on September 30, 1997 and was developed at that time by Black Isle Studios. The game is the original Fallout:

Hmm, well I actually bought this on steam and had a hard time getting the colors correct. I will search for the guide and post it up here so everyone can get the game to look ok.

Fallout color fix!

Post by igoMOTTZILLA on Fri Apr 06, 2012 8:29 pm

f you get palette shifting (odd colors) when you start the standard resolution Fallout or Fallout 2, on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system running Aero, you need to edit the following file under your Fallout directory(s).

Note: On Windows 7 you MUST allow yourself to access these files as by default Windows 7 will NOT allow you to modify anything under Program Files. Just go to properties on the Interplay folder, uncheck the read only box. Then go to security and give yourself (users) FULL CONTROL.

Edit the following file in Notepad. Be careful not to save it as ddraw.ini.txt... notepad may try to add the .txt extension for you !!! select All Files from the dropdown list when saving to avoid this.

DDRAW.INI

Look for the section in the file as follows:

;XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
[Graphics]
;Set to 0 for 8 bit fullscreen
;Set to 4 for dx9 fullscreen
;Set to 5 for dx9 windowed
;dx9 modes cause some corruption of movies
;A dx9 mode is required for any graphics related script extender functions to work (i.e. fullscreen shaders)
;Modes 1, 2 and 3 are no longer supported
Mode=0

Now, change "Mode=" to "Mode-4".

Save the file and start the game normally.

Your "odd color" problems will go away!

PS You can also change the RESOLUTION of the game in this file as well. use at your own risk though! Changing resolution to something like 1024x768 will make it look better on most LCD monitors, however, it WILL cause issues with the VIDEO files contained in the game.

haven't posted a free game in awhile, and this one took me by surprise. A game called Wurm Online, which is a free MMO in which everything is crafted and created by players. Might sound a bit like Minecraft? What threw me way off was that this game has been in open beta since 2006, and apparently Notch (the creator of Minecraft) worked on this game before creating Minecraft.... interesting. Wurm Online will finally got an official 1.0 release on December 12th.
Lets check this game out! http://www.wurmonline.com

Awesome Lord of the Rings Mod for Age of Empires II
Created by Tales of Middle-Earth, the total conversion adapts RTS classic Age of Empires II, adding 18 LOTR factions ready to clash steel on maps based on iconic battles.

Tales’s team created “over a hundred buildings” to erect and tear down at will as you march upon the enemy, including “famous Middle-Earth landmarks like Orthanc, Barad-dûr, The Golden Hall, or Elrond’s Homely House.” Almost 30 new unit types are also included, which means you can finally set an army of Uruk-Hai against a gaggle of elves as punishment for shooting them in the nose at Helm’s Deep in the films.

Multiplayer support and custom scenarios also work with the mod, so you and a friend can grapple for the One Ring together—in a gentlemanly way, of course. Mod DB houses all the necessary files to get started. Hey, you were looking for an excuse to reinstall Age of Empires II anyway.
